NEW NAME AS NEW ERA DAWNS FOR THE HEDLEY WAY CENTRE
The Mayor of Dawlish Cllr Angela Fenne rolled up the shutters and cut the ribbon as Dawlish Town Council took over the Hedley Way Centre to ensure a bright future as an activity hub within
The Mayor, Councillor Angela Fenne, said ‘Dawlish Town Council is honoured to be able to pay tribute to Hedley Way who did so much for the town, by taking on this building and continuing the work of his children Liz Wedlake and John Way to preserve and promote the centre. The bookings for exercise classes here are pouring in so all of us in Dawlish now have no excuse not to keep fit!’
Hedley Way Centre Club members celebrated the building’s new lease of life after years battling against vandalism. Hedley Way, was involved when the original centre was built in the 1950’s and when it was replaced in 2000 it was named after him.
His daughter Liz is a trustee. She said “We are all getting older and it was a struggle to manage the building. It will be wonderful to see it being used every day. We decided to mark the new era by changing the name to The Riverside Centre”.
The Town Council is looking forward to showcasing both The Riverside Centre and The Manor House at the open day on Friday 27th January from 10am – 2.30pm. To give people an opportunity to see what’s on offer there will be demonstrations taking place throughout the day.
In the Manor House there will be Tai Chi & Qigong 11am, Yoga 11.30am, Pilates 12.45pm, Tai Chi 1pm, Line dancing 1.30pm, and at the Riverside Centre we welcome Active Alex and a demonstration of his new exercise class ‘Insanity Live’ at 12noon. Those who want to branch out after working from home will be able to look around the smaller rooms available.
