Dawlish Town Council came into being in 1974 after the largest reshuffle of local government for many years and, prior to this date, had been an Urban District Council. There are a total of 16 Councillors who stand for re-election every 4 years.

The Town Council gained QUALITY COUNCIL STATUS in 2004 and gained reaccreditation in 2008.

There are 3 Wards in the Civil Parish of Dawlish:

North East covering an area from the centre of town and including Dawlish Warren, Eastdon, Middlewood, Cofton and Cockwood

Central covering the town centre area

South West covering an area from the centre of town towards Teignmouth and including Holcombe

Dawlish Town Council is the local authority for the civil parish. The Town is a Mayoralty and a Mayor is elected each May from the Membership of the Council.

Teignbridge District Council (TDC) and Devon County Council (DCC) are the principal authorities that serve the district. Teignbridge District Council spans an area bounded by Buckfastleigh in the South West; Buckland-in-the-Moor in the West; Exminster in the East and Tedburn St. Mary in the North and is responsible for environmental health, revenue collection, planning, the provision of leisure services and housing for the homeless within the district of Teignbridge. The District Council also collects refuse. There are 5 members that represent Dawlish from a total of 58 District Council members

Devon County Council covers the whole of Devon, except for Plymouth and Torbay which have ‘unitary’ councils responsible for both District and County functions. DCC has 85 Councillors in total, of which 1 represents Dawlish. DCC’s main responsibilities are education, libraries, social services, highways, waste disposal, trading standards and the fire service.

Membership of Committees, and the Agendas and Minutes of Committee Meetings are available on this site.
